A night out with friends or a lively party can be a fantastic way to unwind, but it’s essential to prioritize your safety when you hit the town. While most nights are filled with fun and laughter, occasionally, they can take an unexpected turn. To help ensure your night remains enjoyable and safe, here are some valuable tips for avoiding conflict and staying out of harm’s way.

1. Plan Ahead

A successful night out starts with careful planning. Inform a trusted friend or family member about your whereabouts and your expected return time. Share your location with them through your phone or a designated app. Having someone know your plans can be a lifesaver in case of emergencies.

2. Choose Your Company Wisely

Surrounding yourself with the right people can make a significant difference. Go out with friends who have a similar mindset regarding looking after yourself while. Stay together as a group, and have a designated meeting point in case anyone gets separated.

3. Avoid Overindulgence

While it’s fun to enjoy a few drinks, overindulgence can lead to risky situations. Drink responsibly, alternate alcoholic beverages with water, and know your limits. Being in control of your actions is crucial for staying safe.

4. Watch Your Drink

Never leave your drink unattended. If you set it down, even for a moment, consider it compromised. Sadly, drink spiking is a reality, and it’s better to be cautious than sorry. If you need to leave your drink, ask a trustworthy friend to keep an eye on it.

5. Stay in Well-Lit Areas

When walking around the city at night, stick to well-lit and populated areas. Avoid shortcuts through dark alleys or secluded streets. The more visible you are, the less likely you are to encounter trouble.

6. Trust Your Instincts

If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable in a situation or with someone, don’t hesitate to remove yourself from it. It’s always better to be cautious than to risk your safety.

7. De-escalate Conflicts

In the event of a confrontation, try to de-escalate the situation by remaining calm. Walk away if you can, or use verbal communication to diffuse tension. Engaging in a physical altercation should always be the last resort and is usually entirely avoidable.

8. Carry Essentials

Keep your essentials such as identification, phone, some cash, and an emergency contact list in a small bag or pocket. Don’t carry unnecessary valuables that could make you a target – leave the bling watch at home.

9. Arrange Transportation

Plan your journey home in advance. Whether it’s a designated driver, a rideshare service, or public transport, ensure you have a safe way to return after your night out.

10. Stay Connected

Stay connected with your friends throughout the night. Share updates on your location and well-being, and have a backup plan in case your initial plans change.

11. Use Technology Wisely

Utilize your smartphone for safety. There are numerous apps designed to help keep you safe, such as personal safety apps or apps that provide real-time location sharing with trusted contacts.

Cambridge Keeps You Safe

Cambridge is a generally safe city, but like any other city, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and take precautions to stay safe when going out at night. Here are a few tips:

The Purple Flag Initiative

The Purple Flag is an initiative that aims to improve the quality of nightlife in town centres. Cambridge was awarded Purple Flag status in 2019 and has retained it ever since.

The Purple Flag initiative is based on four key objectives:

  • The diversity of the night-time economy: The night-time economy should be inclusive and offer a variety of activities and options for people of all ages and interests.
  • The appeal of the night-time environment: The night-time environment should be attractive and welcoming.
  • The safety and security of the night-time economy: The night-time economy should be safe and secure.

CCTV Throughout Town

Cambridge has a comprehensive CCTV network that covers all areas of the city centre. This network is monitored by the CCTV Control Room, which is staffed 24/7 and in direct radio contact with the venues in Cambridge.

The CCTV network is used to deter crime and disorder, to investigate incidents and to provide evidence to the courts. It is also used to monitor traffic and to collect information about crime trends.

CAMBAC Radio

CAMBAC Radio, also colloquially known as ‘zero’ radio among security staff, is a locally connected radio between clubs, pubs and venues that can communicate directly with the Police, as well as each other and CCTV operators.

This radio network is used frequently to prevent crime and anti-social behaviour in Cambridge.

Conclusion

As you gear up for your night out, remember these simple yet essential safety tips. In Cambridge, you’re in good hands with initiatives like the Purple Flag, a robust CCTV network, and the CAMBAC Radio system, all working to ensure a safe and enjoyable night on the town. So, have a blast, stay safe, and create unforgettable memories!
