Taking a Stand: Nightlife Cambridge and Businesses Against Abuse

Running nightlife events isn’t just about putting on a good party—it’s about creating spaces where people feel safe. That’s why Nightlife Cambridge recently took part in the Businesses Against Abuse (BAA) training, a free initiative designed to help businesses tackle predatory behaviour, sexual harassment, and abuse against women and girls.

Why This Training Matters

The stats are shocking. Five million women in England and Wales have been raped or sexually assaulted since the age of 16. Almost every woman—98%—experiences some form of sexual abuse in their lifetime. It’s a harsh reality, and for those of us working in nightlife, it’s something that can’t be ignored.

BAA isn’t just about ticking boxes or attending a one-off session. It’s about real, practical steps to make venues safer. It teaches staff how to spot the signs of predatory behaviour, how to intervene before a situation escalates, and how to support anyone who needs help.

What the Training Covers

The training goes beyond the basics. It focuses on:

  • Recognising the warning signs – Understanding what predatory behaviour looks like and how to stop it before it escalates.
  • Supporting victims – Making sure anyone who feels vulnerable knows they have somewhere safe to turn.
  • Empowering staff to act – Giving teams the confidence to step in and de-escalate situations safely.
  • Getting accredited – Businesses that complete the training get official recognition from the police, showing their commitment to safer spaces.

Why This Matters for Cambridge Nightlife

For those of us who put on events, safety isn’t just a buzzword—it’s essential. Nights out should be fun, not stressful, and no one should have to worry about unwanted attention or feeling unsafe. Taking part in BAA was about making sure everyone—staff, DJs, promoters, and customers—plays a part in looking out for each other.

Creating a safer nightlife scene isn’t something one venue or one event can do alone. It takes a collective effort. The more businesses that get on board with BAA, the stronger that culture of safety becomes.

How Businesses Can Get Involved

BAA training is free, open to all businesses, and genuinely makes a difference. Whether it’s a bar, club, restaurant, or shop, getting involved means taking a stand against harassment and violence.

If you run a business or work in nightlife, it’s worth checking out. More awareness, better training, and a shared commitment to looking out for one another will only make Cambridge’s nightlife better for everyone.
